What is it?

An analysis by animal type

Depending on the animal, the issues may involve veterinary costs, assistance, death, transport, civil liability or sports and leisure use.

Mandatory?

Rarely mandatory

Coverage is generally not required by law, but some liabilities may already be covered by your private liability insurance or may require an extension.

Use and real value

An animal used for sport, breeding, boarding or paid activity is not treated like an animal kept solely for private purposes.

What can specific insurance cover?

For animals other than dogs and cats, the first question is not only “how much is the premium?”, but what risk really needs to be insured: veterinary costs, liability, death, disability, transport, boarding, sport use or entrusted animal.

The most structured Swiss solutions mainly concern horses and equids. Some specialized offers work by levels, with accident, illness, surgery, death, disability, complementary care or assistance, sometimes with reimbursement announced around 90% after deductible depending on the plan.

The right policy depends on real use

1Animal

Horse, pony, donkey, leisure animal, exotic pet or entrusted animal do not present the same risks.

2Value

We distinguish sentimental value, purchase value, sport value, breeding value and possible veterinary costs.

3Use

Private leisure, competition, boarding, half-boarding, breeding or paid activity change the conditions.

4Liability

We check who is liable if the animal injures someone, causes damage or is injured at a third party’s premises.

Common pitfalls

Specific animals often create grey areas between veterinary costs, liability and actual activity.

Insufficient private liabilityIt does not automatically cover all damage linked to a horse, boarding or sporting activity.
Third-party horseRiding a borrowed or half-boarded horse may require a specific extension.
Undeclared useCompetition, breeding, paid activity or boarding must be clearly declared.
Age and healthA veterinary report, age limit or exclusion may apply depending on the plan.

I already have this policy, how can I cancel or switch insurer?

Review the renewal date, notice period, cancellation conditions, exclusions and medical or veterinary acceptance by the new insurer. For horses and valuable animals, avoid any interruption of cover before written confirmation of the new solution.

Horses, riding and entrusted animals

Horses concentrate several risks: high veterinary costs, surgery, transport, death, disability, keeper liability and rider liability. If you ride a third-party horse, on half-board or in a school, basic private liability is not always enough to cover damage to the horse itself or equipment.

Finwise also checks whether your situation is purely private or falls within a broader context: competition, boarding, breeding, teaching, paid activity or regular transport. This distinction often changes the necessary cover.

What about exotic or less common animals?

For rabbits, birds, reptiles or other less common animals, insurance offers are generally more limited and often studied case by case. The analysis then focuses on real value, possible veterinary costs, keeping obligations, liability and care or transport conditions.
