What is it?

Build your health cover

Basic LAMal insurance for statutory benefits, plus optional supplements for hospital, dental, glasses or natural medicine.

Mandatory?

Yes for LAMal, no for supplements

Anyone domiciled in Switzerland must enrol. Supplements are optional and subject to a health questionnaire.

Key point

Compare the total cost, not just the premium

Deductible, co-payment, care model and accident cover change what you really pay in case of illness.

Health priorities

LAMal first, premium levers, then useful supplements.

  1. Next Supplements Hospital, outpatient, dental
  2. Levers Deductible / model Control the premium
  3. Obligation LAMal Legal base

Do not pay for options you do not use.

Where to start to choose your health insurance

Basic benefits are identical from one insurer to another. What changes are the premium, canton, deductible, care model, service and accident cover. The insurer must accept you for LAMal, without a medical questionnaire.

On fixe d’abord un niveau de franchise réaliste, puis un modèle de soins compatible avec votre façon de consulter, puis on vérifie l’accident et les complémentaires. Le détail produit est sur l’assurance maladie.

Choice
Impact
To check
DeductibleCHF 300 to 2,500
A high deductible lowers the premium, but you pay more yourself before reimbursement.
Likely medical costs, available reserve and planned care.
Care modelStandard, GP, HMO, Telmed
An alternative model reduces the premium if you accept a defined first point of contact.
Doctor network, access to specialists and emergency care outside the canton.
Accident / supplementsDepending on the case
Employer LAA often from 8 hours/week; supplements for hospital, dental, optical or travel.
Remove accident cover only if LAA is active; do not cancel a supplement before acceptance.

The real cost is calculated in four elements

Annual premium + Deductible + Co-payment + Accident

After the deductible, the co-payment is 10%, capped at CHF 700/year for an adult and CHF 350 for a child.

LAMal and supplements: two different logics

LAMal is mandatory, standardised and must accept you. Supplements fall under the ICA: the insurer may accept, refuse or add reservations. They can cover semi-private or private hospitalisation, dental, glasses, complementary medicine or travel.

You can have basic cover with one insurer and supplements elsewhere. That can make sense, but it must be organised properly to avoid duplicates, missed deadlines or cancellation before written acceptance.

Few medical costs

A high deductible + alternative model can sharply lower the premium, provided you have a reserve for a hard hit.

Regular care / pregnancy

A low deductible is often safer. Also anticipate hospitalisation and any supplements before a known need.

Employee (≥ 8 hrs/week)

LAA generally covers accidents: you can often exclude accident cover from LAMal and reduce the premium.

Self-employed / without LAA

Keep accident cover in LAMal, and also check income protection if time off work threatens your billing.

Common pitfalls

LAMal is standardised, but the wrong deductible, model or supplement can be expensive.

Deductible too highIt lowers the premium, but can be painful in case of surgery, pregnancy or chronic illness.
Model misunderstoodTelmed, HMO or family doctor models impose a precise care pathway.
Duplicated accident coverEmployees covered by LAA can often exclude accident cover from LAMal.
Supplement cancelled too soonWait for written acceptance before cancelling existing cover.

You want to change insurer: what should you check?

To change basic insurance on 1 January, cancellation must reach the previous insurer by 30 November at the latest. Also enrol with a new insurer to avoid any interruption. For supplements, check renewal dates, health questionnaire and written acceptance before any cancellation.
