Insure the assets that keep the business running
Premises, machines, stock, IT and fittings must be protected against fire, water, theft, natural events and technical breakdowns.
Often required, rarely enough on its own
The lease, bank or landlord may require it. In practice, you also need to think about business interruption and technical modules.
Replacing equipment is not enough
The real risk is business interruption: rents, salaries and charges continue while turnover drops.
Premises and equipment priorities
Realistic inventory, then interruption if a claim stops everything.
- Often critical Business interruption After fire or major damage
- Base Premises, stock, equipment Declared operating assets
Stock and machines are often undervalued.
Your assets are your working tools
Premises, furniture, machines, computers, installations, goods and stock often represent an essential part of an SME's capital. Replacing them after a claim can be expensive, but stopping activity sometimes costs even more.
Good cover is therefore not limited to reimbursing equipment. It must make it possible to restart operations quickly, pay fixed costs and limit loss of turnover.
The logic of premises / equipment protection
Replacing a machine is useful. Being able to keep invoicing while it arrives is even more so.
What property or commercial insurance covers
Une assurance commerce intervient généralement après incendie, événements naturels, dégât d’eau, vol avec effraction ou bris de glace. Elle peut aussi couvrir l’inventaire d’exploitation : machines, outils, informatique, installations et marchandises.
The detail matters. Seasonal stock, entrusted goods, tenant fittings or equipment used off-site are not always included automatically. That is often where the most costly gaps form.
Business interruption: the cover not to forget
After a claim, inventory insurance replaces damaged assets. But if machines are not deliverable for two months or the premises must be renovated, your turnover drops while rents, salaries, leasing and charges continue.
Business interruption can cover lost profit, fixed costs and additional costs needed to maintain activity: temporary premises, equipment rental, temporary subcontracting or exceptional logistics costs.
Tenant
The lease may require a certificate, business liability and specific covers. Also check who insures fittings, shop windows and alterations.
Owner
Building insurance, owner liability and loss of rental income can become essential depending on cantonal rules.
Production / workshop
A critical machine often justifies a technical module: internal breakdown, handling error or replacement lead time that is too long.
Commerce / services
Stock, IT, shop window and dependency on the premises matter as much as furniture. Continuity often outweighs simple replacement.
Common pitfalls
Mistakes are rarely found when signing. They appear when a claim really blocks activity.
You already have a policy: what should you check?
Mettez à jour les sommes assurées après achat de machines ou croissance du stock. Vérifiez franchises, exclusions, biens hors site, durée de perte d’exploitation et éventuels modules assurances techniques. Un inventaire à jour évite souvent une mauvaise surprise.
