Insure the tools that keep your activity running
Workshop, office, stock, machines, IT and equipment at the client's premises must be protected against fire, water, theft and technical breakdowns.
Often required by the lease, rarely enough on its own
The landlord, bank or leasing company may require it. In practice, you also need to think about business interruption and off-site assets.
Replacing equipment is not enough
The real risk is business interruption: charges and rents continue while turnover drops.
Self-employed premises and equipment priorities
Tools, stock, business vehicle: what stops invoicing if lost.
- Critical Business interruption If you can no longer work
- Base Means of production Declared equipment and premises
Often forgotten: gear at the client’s site.
Your assets are your working tools
For a self-employed person, premises, machines, tools, computer, stock and fittings often represent an essential part of capital. Replacing them after a claim can be expensive, but stopping billing sometimes costs even more.
The logic of premises / equipment protection
Replacing a machine is useful. Being able to keep invoicing while it arrives is even more so.
What property or commercial insurance covers
The detail matters. Seasonal stock, entrusted goods, tenant fittings or equipment used off-site are not always included automatically. That is often where the most costly gaps form for a self-employed person.
Business interruption: the cover not to forget
After a claim, inventory insurance replaces damaged assets. But if your main tool is not deliverable for several weeks or the premises must be renovated, your turnover drops while rents, leasing and charges continue.
Workshop / crafts
A critical machine often justifies a technical module: internal breakdown, handling error or replacement lead time that is too long.
Home office / digital
Computer, data and dependency on the home matter as much as furniture. Check theft, water damage and digital continuity.
Work at the client's premises
Off-site equipment, on site or in transit: without an extension, the base policy can leave a major gap.
Tenant
The lease may require a certificate and specific covers. Also check who insures fittings, shop windows and alterations.
Common pitfalls
Mistakes are rarely found when signing. They appear when a claim really blocks activity.
You already have a policy: what should you check?
