What is it?

Protect your home and what it contains

Household contents for your belongings, private liability for damage caused to others, building cover if you own, and extensions for valuables.

Mandatory?

Depending on the canton, lease and status

Private liability is almost always required by property managers. Household fire/natural hazards cover is mandatory in some cantons. Building insurance often is for owners.

Key point

Do not confuse your belongings and your liability

Household contents replaces what is yours. Private liability indemnifies a third party if you cause damage, including in a rented home.

Housing and belongings priorities

Tenant or owner: contents, walls and liability do not mix.

  1. By status Building Only if you own the property
  2. Core Household Furniture and belongings new-for-old
  3. Safety net Private liability Damage caused to others

Underestimating inventory is the most common trap.

Where to start to protect home and belongings

In Switzerland, home protection is rarely built with a single policy. Tenant or owner, studio or house, jewellery or e-bike: priorities change, but the logic stays the same.

Start by distinguishing what belongs to you, what belongs to the building, and what you might owe a third party. Only then compare deductibles, sums insured and options. Finwise helps you set this plan before comparing offers.

Cover
What it protects
Typical priority
Household contents insuranceYour belongings
Furniture, clothes, electronics, bikes and personal effects against fire, water, theft and natural events.
Essential for almost all households; mandatory fire/natural hazards cover in some cantons.
Private liabilityYour liability
Bodily, material or tenant damage caused unintentionally to a third party, including to a rented home.
Almost essential for tenants; often required by the landlord.
Building / valuablesDepending on the case
Structure and installations for owners; jewellery, watches, art or instruments beyond household ceilings.
Building for owners; valuables as soon as household ceilings become too low.

The logic of coherent home protection

Your belongings + Your liability + The building = Complete cover

Without this distinction, people take out too much, too little, or two policies that do not address the same risk.

Tenant or owner: priorities change

Tenant in an apartment

Private liability + household contents first. Check tenant damage, sum insured at new value and off-premises theft options.

Owner

Building + household contents + liability. Clarify who covers fitted kitchen, plot, solar panels or fittings.

Valuables

Jewellery, watches, art or instruments: household ceilings are often too low. An extension or dedicated policy becomes useful.

Mobile life

Bike, laptop, luggage: off-premises theft is not always included. Also check links with travel and family cover.

Common pitfalls

Mistakes are rarely found when signing. They appear after water damage, theft or a landlord claim.

UnderinsuranceAn undervalued inventory can reduce indemnity at the time of the claim.
Liability and household contents confusedYour belongings are not damage caused to others: the two roles are distinct.
Forgotten cantonal obligationFire and natural hazards can be imposed depending on the canton, for household contents or building.
Items above ceilingJewellery, instruments or photo equipment often exceed the limits of the base policy.

You already have policies: what should you check?
