What is it?

Protect your vehicle and third parties

Third-party liability covers damage caused to others. Casco protects your own vehicle. Assistance and motor legal protection complete the cover depending on use.

Mandatory?

Yes for third-party liability, before the plates

In Switzerland, a registered vehicle must have third-party liability insurance. Minimum CHF 5 million per event for bodily injury and property damage.

Key point

Well insured, not over-insured

Comprehensive casco is useful for a new or leased vehicle; sometimes excessive on an older low-value car.

Vehicle priorities

Mandatory liability, casco by value, extras by use.

  1. Extras Roadside assistance / legal By trips and claims history
  2. By value Casco Partial or fully comprehensive
  3. Mandatory Liability Damage to others

Driver profile changes the premium as much as options.

Where to start to insure a vehicle

Before comparing premiums, set the level of protection: liability only, partial casco or comprehensive casco, then genuinely useful options. Two offers close in price can differ sharply on deductible, bonus, indemnity value and assistance.

Cover
What it protects
When to consider it
Motor third-party liabilityMandatory
Damage caused to third parties: people, vehicles, buildings or other property.
Always necessary to register and drive legally.
Partial cascoOptional
Theft, fire, hail, glass breakage, natural forces or collision with animals, depending on the contract.
Relevant if the vehicle’s value still justifies covering these risks.
Comprehensive cascoOften with leasing
Adds damage to your own vehicle after a collision, even if you are at fault.
To prioritise for a new, recent, expensive or financed vehicle.

The logic of coherent vehicle cover

Mandatory liability + Suitable casco + Useful options = Good balance

Start from the legal obligation, then add only what the vehicle’s value, leasing and your use justify.

Casco, leasing and options: what really changes

The law does not require comprehensive casco, but a leasing contract very often does. On an older low-value vehicle, keeping comprehensive casco can cost more than the risk actually assumed.

Les options à examiner ensuite : assistance, dommages de parcage, valeur vénale majorée, protection du bonus et protection juridique circulation pour les litiges liés à un accident, un permis, un achat ou une réparation.

New / recent car

Comprehensive casco often recommended. Collision, increased market value and parking damage deserve a serious analysis.

Leasing

First check the lessor’s requirements. Insufficient cover can cause problems even if the law does not require it.

Older vehicle

Liability only or partial casco may be enough. The aim is to avoid paying for disproportionate protection.

Young driver

Premium, deductible and bonus vary sharply. Bonus protection and vehicle choice become strategic.

Common pitfalls

Vehicle insurance is not judged on premium alone. Deductible, indemnity value, leasing and claims history matter as much.

Premium too lowIt can hide a high deductible, a low indemnity value or less assistance.
Forgotten leasingInsufficient cover can conflict with the lessor’s conditions.
Small claim reported too quicklyDepending on the bonus-malus system, it can cost more in the medium term.
Casco kept too longOn an older vehicle, the premium can become disproportionate.

You already have a policy: what should you check?

Check renewal date, deductible, bonus, declared drivers, private/business use, assistance already included, leasing requirements and the vehicle’s current value. Before cancelling, wait for confirmation of the new certificate for registration or transfer.
