Mandatory

Liability insurance is required for plates

As with a car, a two-wheeler registered in Switzerland must be insured for liability with a Swiss insurer before obtaining plates.

Key fact

At least CHF 5 million in liability cover

Liability insurance must cover injured parties’ claims up to at least CHF 5 million per event for bodily injury and property damage.

  3. Mandatory Motorcycle / scooter liability Damage caused to others

Power, parking and seasonality strongly affect the choice.

Which cover should you choose for a two-wheeler?

Cover
What is it for?
When should you consider it?
Liability insuranceMandatory
Covers damage caused to third parties: people, vehicles, buildings or other property.
Always required to register and drive legally.
Partial cascoOptional
Protects your motorcycle or scooter against theft, fire, hail, natural forces or collision with an animal, depending on the policy.
Relevant if the two-wheeler’s value still justifies covering these risks.
Collision / full cascoOften useful
Adds damage to your own vehicle after a fall or collision, even if you are at fault.
Recommended for a new, recent, expensive or financed motorcycle.
Useful optionsTo choose
Assistance, gear (helmet, jacket), bonus protection or traffic legal protection.
To be adapted to your trips, parking and ability to absorb a claim.

What to know before comparing two-wheeler insurance

Motorcycle, scooter, 125 cc or large engine: premium and conditions vary strongly with power, rider age, bonus, parking location and use (daily, weekend, leisure). Two offers close in price may differ on deductible, indemnity value, theft or assistance.

The insurer sends the electronic insurance certificate to the cantonal vehicle office. Without this certificate, the vehicle registration document and plates are not issued.

Urban scooter

Watch theft and parking

A scooter used in town deserves a careful look at theft cover, deductibles and required security conditions (lock, garage, parking).

Recent motorcycle

Full casco often recommended

A new or recent motorcycle may justify collision casco, especially if a repair or replacement would be hard to absorb.

Seasonal use

Check cover suspension

Some policies allow cover to be adapted out of season. We check whether this really applies to your situation.

Young rider

Watch the bonus and deductible

The premium can vary significantly depending on age, experience and type of two-wheeler. Bonus protection can become strategic.

Common pitfalls we check with you

Motorcycle or scooter insurance is not judged only by its premium. Finwise also looks at the deductible, theft, gear, assistance and the real risk of a claim.

Premium too lowIt may hide a high deductible, low indemnity value or less assistance.
Theft poorly coveredSecurity conditions and theft exclusions are often decisive for a two-wheeler.
Gear forgottenHelmet, jacket or accessories are not always included in the vehicle value.
Casco kept too longOn an older vehicle, the premium may become disproportionate.

I already have motorcycle or scooter insurance: can I switch?
