Replace income when you can no longer work
Protecting your income means coordinating salary continuation, daily benefits, LAA, DI, occupational pension and any private annuity to pay your costs.
Partly: DI and LAA, not always daily sickness benefits
Disability insurance is mandatory. LAA covers accidents according to employment. Daily sickness benefits are not required by federal law, but often provided via the employer or a CLA.
Illness often creates the largest gap
Many people are better protected for accidents than for long illness. LAMal pays for care, not your salary.
Income protection priorities
Without replacement income, the rest of the cover collapses.
- Long term Disability Lastingly reduced income
- Short term Loss of earnings Work stoppage
Short term, long term and death cover complement each other.
Where to start to protect your income
Before taking out an individual policy, map what already exists: employer salary continuation, collective daily benefits, LAA, occupational pension, any complementary LAA and available savings. Only then calculate what is missing to pay rent, mortgage, family and premiums.
The logic of income protection
The right contract is not the most expensive: it is the one that covers the amount you really need, at the right time.
Employees: what the law and employer often provide
In case of illness, the employer must continue salary for a limited period under article 324a of the Code of Obligations, if the employment relationship has lasted more than three months or was concluded for more than three months. Duration depends notably on seniority and applicable scales.
Many companies replace this obligation with daily sickness benefits insurance. A solution often considered equivalent covers at least 80% of salary for 720 or 730 days, with the employer usually contributing to premiums. Always ask for the regulations, insured rate and what happens if you leave the company.
Employee with collective daily benefits
First check the employer contract. A long-term private annuity may still be useful if occupational pension and DI leave a gap.
Part-time / multiple employers
Non-occupational LAA and insured occupational pension salary may be incomplete. Map each contract before deciding.
High income / mortgage
Social and occupational pension ceilings often leave a gap. Calculate the income really needed to keep the home.
Without clear daily benefits
If salary continuation is short or unclear, individual loss of earnings and a disability view become priorities.
Common pitfalls
Mistakes are rarely seen at subscription. They appear as soon as income really stops.
